Abortion Clinic - Servicing Corona, Riverside, Fontana, San Bernardino

Q: Do you offer free pregnancy testing?
A: Yes, we offer a free pregnancy test to anyone that wants one.

Q: What is the cost of an abortion procedure?
A: The typical abortion procedure charge is $400 for up to 9 weeks of pregnancy. However, depending on how far along the pregnancy is, or based on other risk factors, there may be an additional charge. The fee is all inclusive, and includes the cost of blood work, medications administered during the procedure, ultrasound examination, local anesthesia, as well as post operative follow up visit.

Q: What is medical abortion?
A: Medical abortion is induced with a medication called RU486 (mifepristone). Although no surgery is usually necessary, sometimes a rescue surgery (D and C) is necessary to resolve the pregnancy. Medical abortion is only effective for a very early pregnancy, and even in those cases does not always work. Severe cramping, pain, and bleeding can occur, and can result in a medical emergency. A risk of the medical abortion procedure includes sudden hemorrhage, which may necessitate surgical D and C. For these reasons, great caution is advised to anyone contemplating medical abortion.

Q: How safe is a surgical abortion procedure?
A: As with any surgical procedure, an abortion carries some risk. Although abortions are usually very safe, there is a small risk of infection, bleeding, uterine perforation, blood transfusion, hospitalization, hysterectomy, sterility, or even death. However, the risks of such events are low, and in experienced hands are very low. Such risks must be weighed against the risks of continuing the pregnancy, which carries risks that are similar or higher in likelihood.

Q: Will an abortion affect future fertility?
A: The answer is possibly, although highly unlikely. If one of the above complications occur, there is an increased likelihood of infertility in the future. However, since such events are rare, the likelihood of future infertility is also rare.

Q: What should I expect after a surgical abortion?
A: In most cases, mild cramps and slight vaginal bleeding is the extent of all that is expected after an abortion procedure. Some discomfort and cramping is normal, as is some bleeding. The bleeding usually lightens significantly or ceases within 2-3 weeks. If the bleeding is heavier than a period, or lasts longer than 3 weeks, you should seek an evaluation by us. If the pain is severe, or you notice heavy discharge or fevers or chills, contact us.

Q: When can I return to work after a surgical abortion?
A: Usually, within 2-3 days after the surgical abortion you may resume work. You should wait longer if directed to do so by you health care provider.

Q: When can I resume sexual activity after an abortion?
A: You should refrain from any sexual activity for at least 4 weeks. Do not have sex prior to returning for your follow up visit in 3 weeks.

Q: What kind of anesthesia will I be given during the abortion?
A: In the past, options for surgical abortion have included general and local anesthesia. General anesthesia presents a higher risk of death, aspiration pneumonia, uterine perforation, and vaginal bleeding. Therefore, for safety reasons, we do not offer general anesthesia. We have found that local anesthesia is safer and provides adequate pain relief during the abortion. Local anesthesia is sometimes combined with a mild sedative / tranquilizer, and provides adequate pain relief for surgical abortion.

Q: What type of transportation do I need afterwards?
A: It is best to be accompanied by another adult, and ideally to have that adult be able to drive you. We do not recommend that you drive, walk home, or take the bus by yourself after your abortion procedure.

Q: Can someone accompany me during the surgical abortion?
A: You may have someone accompany you while in the waiting lobby. However, both for safety as well as confidentiality reasons, non-patients are not permitted in the recovery area or procedure room.

Q: How long does the abortion surgery take?
A: The actual surgical procedure takes no more than 20 minutes. However, preparing you for the procedure takes much longer, since a history and exam must be performed, as well as paperwork, blood work, an ultrasound, and time to observe you after the surgery. All together, plan on spending at least 3 hours at our medical clinic.

Q: What is your confidentiality policy?
A: We are committed to protecting your confidentiality as much as possible. We understand the sensitive nature of family planning and abortion services, and do whatever we can to protect patient confidentiality. We do not release any information to anyone other than you unless specifically directed to do so by you, or as is required by law.

Q: Do I need to inform and get the consent of my partner (husband or boyfriend) or parents if I am a minor?
A: No. The consent of the pregnant patient is all that is needed. The parent's consent is not necessary for a pregnant minor patient in California.

Q: Why do I need to return for a follow up visit after the abortion?
A: A follow up visit is always recommended between 2 to 3 weeks after the surgical abortion. This is necessary to ensure that the abortion was successful, as well as to address any problems that may have arisen after the abortion. Occasionally, some pregnancy tissue may have been retained, and this needs to be evacuated. Therefore, a follow up visit at our medical clinic is very important to ensure that the unplanned pregnancy has completely resolved without any problems.

Q: Do I need an appointment for an abortion?
A: Although we welcome walk-in patients and try to accommodate them as much as possible, we cannot guarantee that they will be seen that day. Therefore, it is recommended that you obtain an appointment if possible.

Q: Do you offer the morning after pill?
A: Yes, we offer the morning after pill (emergency contraception). It is recommended that you come in to see us as soon as possible after the unprotected sexual encounter, as the effectiveness of this pill decreases with the passage of time.
